I always have the jazzy version going in my head whenever I think of “When the Saints Go Marching In.” However, this song originated as a United States spiritual gospel hymn. The jazz version is so happy and uplifting!
The traditional lyrics are apocalyptic, with references from the Book of Revelation. Because the hymn makes references to “marching in” (the pearly gates), it has been used at funerals. The song has been referred to as “jazz funeral.”
